As a little girl, Yachiyo was scouted to become a member of a model group. Because of that, she started living with her grandmother in a house called Mikazuki Villa in Shinsei Ward, Kamihama City, Japan. The Mikazuki Villa also served as a boarding house for several students, resulting in a lively place, where Yachiyo was treated kindly (and sometimes even pampered) by her granmother and students alike.

When Yachiyo was 12, the leader of her modeling group had an unfortunate accident (which Yachiyo was a part of, though unintentionally), which resulted in her having to resign as a leader. In an attempt to atone for causing the accident and take the responsibility for the team, Yachiyo stepped up to become a new leader, much to the annoyance of several members. One day, when she was agonizing over whether she can pass the group's mentor to become the leader, she was approached by a small, white creature that introduced itself as "Kyuubey". Kyuubey promised her to make her one wish come true, provided she becomes a Magical Girl in return and fights Witches plaguing the world. Given an opportunity for a miracle, Yachiyo made her wish: "I want to survive" and the contract was complete. At the time, she simply hoped to be chosen as the leader of her group and guide them to success, and that much certainly happened - she became the leader of the models, but the girls were split on whether to accept her or not, despite the successes of the group that followed.

At the same time, however, she was starting to learn the brutality of the path she'd chosen. Fighting with the Witches turned out to be far more dangerous than she'd ever imagined, and the realization that she'd be risking her life all the time from there on hit her hard. She met another newbie Magical Girl called Mifuyu, and while she was harsh on her at first for being a crybaby (while trying to appear tough herself), the two started bonding and quickly became close friends, as well as partners in fighting Witches.

Eventually, her wish for success seemingly turned against her ─ due to her outstanding performance, her mentor decided she should pursue a solo modeling career, as she shined much brighter on her own than with her group (who felt betrayed by that outcome). With that, she started feeling like her wish has gone to waste, but thanks to support from Mifuyu (and, in turn, giving similar support to her) she decided to keep on fighting. Somewhere down the line, she and Mifuyu were joined by another Magical Girl called Kaname. One day, when fighting a particularly powerful Witch, Kaname's Soul Gem, the source of Magical Girl's power, was shattered in the struggle, effectively killing her. It was then that the girls learned the cruel truth about themselves: they were no longer truly human, their bodies merely empty husks that they controlled with their souls that were locked up in the Soul Gems. Despite this horrifying discovery, Yachiyo and Mifuyu soon formed a new team, joined by Momoko, Tsuruno and Mel. One evening, the girls (sans Tsuruno, who had stayed home to help her dad) decided to go hunting Witches, but happened upon one that was way too powerful for them to handle. They managed to take it down, but at a heavy toll ─ Mel depleted all of her magic during the fight, resulting in her Soul Gem turning into a Grief Seed, giving birth to a new Witch. Finally aware of the true, inescapable fate of Magical Girls and blaming herself for the deaths of her friends, Yachiyo decided to cut her connections to other Magical Girls and work on her own.

Calm and composed, Yachiyo might come across as serious and stern, and that impression isn't far from the truth. Due to being older and more mature than most Magical Girls, she often takes the role of an older sister of sorts, making calculated decisions and taking responsibility where others might act more impulsively and recklessly.

That's not to say she's cold or uncaring, however; quite the opposite, she's kind and very protective of other girls, especially her Mikazuki Villa team.

Yachiyo is a Magical Girl, which means that in exchange for her wish coming true she agreed to devote the rest of her life fighting Witches ─ grotesque-looking monsters that hide from human sight, spreading curses and causing various disasters.
